Hills are necessary in running…

This hill kicks my butt more than I care to admit! It continues around the bend, it just seems to go on forever.

My husband always tells me that hills make me a stronger runner.  I don’t always like to listen to his running advice, it makes too much sense!  I learned something valuable on my run this afternoon.  He was right!  The hills that I run in my neighbourhood are very beneficial to my training.

Let’s be honest, hills are frustrating and for some reason I always seem to be running into the wind when I have to tackle one.  By the time I get to the top of a hill my face is red and I’m breathing pretty hard.  My pace is also slower, I don’t like being slower.  But I run them anyways because of where I live.  There are only hills here and some of them are big (I my opinion).

Today, I was working in the library at my daughter’s school and I really needed to get my long run in.  I must to get up to the 10k mark and today had to be a long run, the rest of the week is just too busy.  So, I mapped out my 7k route starting at the school.  About halfway through I realized how much my hill running was paying off.  Normally I run at a 6:30-6:45 minutes/km pace.  Today I averaged 6:19 and that was after I hit a wall of dehydration at the 4k mark (my antibiotics were the culprit on that one).  What was the difference?  There were no hills on this route, it was relatively flat.  Sure it wasn’t 100% flat, like running in The Netherlands, but it was pretty flat.

The other thing I learned about hills…I like them!  They make the landscape more interesting, they break up the run.  Running today almost seemed boring, it was almost not challenging.  I struggle with writing that because the run was still a challenge, but it was just different, I can’t put it into words.

Hills are for training, I’m glad I’m surrounded by them where I live.  Flat running is for races where I can then feel faster!!!  If you run, find hills, you will hate them but you will learn to appreciate them.

Running can be a time of worship…

I don’t like to get up early. My kids will confirm that. I have been known to crawl out of bed after they all leave for school. Sunday mornings have changed recently for me. Instead of getting up a 8:30 and getting ready for church, I dragged myself out at 7:00 so I could get a run in.

The thing that shocked me the most was how wonderful a Sunday morning run can be. Sure, the other mornings are okay but they are filled with commuters, trucks and school buses.

The air was cool but the morning sun felt so warm. As I started out, I just drank in that sunshine. I let my feet do all the work, I let my body do what I knew it could. I chose to enjoy my surroundings. I forgot my iPod so my ears were wide open to the sounds around me. First I heard the birds and around a corner the crickets and other bugs joined the choir. I kept running, past a pond, I heard the frogs. I opened my ears to the chorus that the world worships God with. It was beautiful!

 

The animals in the fields just shouted out the majesty of His creation.

 

 

The colours seemed extra bright this morning, the dew in the grass gleamed. This was true worship. Nature was calling out to God and my heart and mind sang along.

This time alone with my God is another reason why I run.

6k Run, I Finally Did It…

Today, for the first time since my half marathon in January, I ran more than 5k.  Well, my regular block is actually 5.43k but for some reason 6 seemed so much farther.  I guess because it is the start of lengthening my runs so that I can get to 10k in the next 5 weeks.

Sometimes I wonder why I set goals that scare me. I know, I know, “do one thing everyday that scares you”. I don’t buy into that, I can’t think of a new scary thing everyday. But this run, it scared me.

Well, after running errands with my son, I knew I could put it off no longer. Surprise, surprise! The run was not tough, it felt great! It makes me think that the heat was beating me up more than the hills and the actual running. I ran every hill with ease? Well, maybe not ease, but it was easier than the last time. I ran 10 minutes and walked one, consistently. I finished strong, I felt strong.

This is why I run, this feeling is the high that I love. For the first time in four months I finished my run thinking that I can’t wait for the next one.

A good day…

I feel like life is finally getting back to some sort of normalcy. That is until Thursday comes around and my husband and I head out to BC so he can participate in Ironman Canada. I’m going to volunteer but it is going to be busy. We will see how well I can keep my momentum going.

This past week I have been careful about what I have been eating and trying to exercise regularly. This morning I officially weighed myself for my program and I lost 2 pounds. I was really pleased. I want to be healthy and get back into some of my favorite pieces of clothing! It is so awesome to see my hard work pay off.

I headed out for my usual 4k run. The one that is normally kicking my butt. Today I was determined that I would run the hills. I knew that my mind was convincing my body that the hill was too much. I told myself, over and over again, that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil. 4:13). Over and over I repeated this and I ran up my hill, the hill that has been a big discouragement.

I did it! I ran up with out stopping. I was overjoyed. I then walked for a bit and when I was a kilometer from home I was again determined to run the rest of the way. I almost gave up but I kept going. It was the best run I’ve had in a long time! I will continue with this route form the rest of the week and once we are back from British Columbia I will head back out on my 5.4km route. By the end of October I should be back up to 10km!

I will not let busyness get the best of me…

Today I felt the busyness of life yet again and that was only driving one of the kids around!

I did manage to get my run in. I was planning on going 4km but had to cut it short since there was an obstacle on my path. I ran my 3.68km in 24.47 minutes. The final half kilometer totally kicked my butt. If I can just get through that run with less difficulty then I can move back to my 5km route. I’m thinking about signing up for two more 5k races before the year is out. I have really come to realize that if I don’t Sign up for races, I’m not as determined to run. I’m hoping to be back up to 10km by Christmas. I have failed at most of my other goals so far, or shall I say I haven’t been successful yet!

We shall see, but I do have a new sense of determinedness in me.

Back at it…

We went on a month-long European vacation. We visited Germany, The Netherlands, France and Ireland. We did our best to eat healthy. We generally made our own meals since we always had kitchens where we stayed (that is a necessity when travelling with 4 teens!) On top of all that, we walked everywhere.

Then I came home. I still had the appetite that I developed with all that walking. I kept eating but stopped walking. I had a tough time getting over jet lag and doing all the other things a mom has to do and I used these things as an excuse not to run.

Well, last week I realized that the excuses had to end. I made up a three-week meal plan of food that the kids really like to eat but still fits within our healthy eating plan. I went to the grocery store and stocked up on the food to make almost a full week of meals. It was great! Lots of choices and I didn’t have to wonder each evening what I was going to feed the family.

Yesterday, I after a day with my extended family I realized that I needed to be serious about getting back into shape. It gets to easy not to be active. My extended family is not active enough and that is not a lifestyle I want for my children.

This morning, I headed back out for a run. I went a couple of times last week, but today I made a commitment to be back to running regularly, not just when it is convenient.

When I got up this morning, I started to make excuses. I didn’t sleep well last night, it is already quite warm out, I’m coming down with a cold and not running will be better. I told myself to shut up, changed into my running gear and headed out. I only planned a 2km run and 2km is what I did. My watch was dead so I figured it took me about 14 minutes. It felt great and I’m glad I went out. Isn’t that always the case when we do something good for us, we always feel better once it is done.

Soon the kids will head back to school and it will be even easier to develop a good routine. I have also asked my Ironman husband to become my personal trainer so that I can work on my problem areas. I want to be fit and I am even more determined to see that goal through. A new dress for Christmas is my goal!! Shopping is always a great reward.

Running in Europe…

I have been fairly negligent with my running as of late. I let the busyness of life get in the way. Two of my kids graduated, one from elementary school and another from high school. We also headed out for a European vacation.

We spent a week in Germany with friends that have been living there for the past three years. I went out for only one run. Germany is very, very hilly. It was also extremely hot for a few days. we also climbed many hills while looking at the "very old thing" that my 17-year-old son loves to see.

Two days ago we arrived in the Netherlands. This country is nice and flat. We are staying in an apartment that is in the country, but near cities. There is walking and bike paths everywhere.

Today I went for a run with three of my children. We ran 5k in about 33 minutes. The run was beautiful. Lots of farmland and water filled ditches all along the way.
