Running can be a time of worship…

I don’t like to get up early. My kids will confirm that. I have been known to crawl out of bed after they all leave for school. Sunday mornings have changed recently for me. Instead of getting up a 8:30 and getting ready for church, I dragged myself out at 7:00 so I could get a run in.

The thing that shocked me the most was how wonderful a Sunday morning run can be. Sure, the other mornings are okay but they are filled with commuters, trucks and school buses.

The air was cool but the morning sun felt so warm. As I started out, I just drank in that sunshine. I let my feet do all the work, I let my body do what I knew it could. I chose to enjoy my surroundings. I forgot my iPod so my ears were wide open to the sounds around me. First I heard the birds and around a corner the crickets and other bugs joined the choir. I kept running, past a pond, I heard the frogs. I opened my ears to the chorus that the world worships God with. It was beautiful!

The animals in the fields just shouted out the majesty of His creation.

The colours seemed extra bright this morning, the dew in the grass gleamed. This was true worship. Nature was calling out to God and my heart and mind sang along.

This time alone with my God is another reason why I run.

Watching my son grow up…

I have always said that we are not raising children, but raising future adults. Today I came to the realization that my son is now a man. I have watched him morph into this completely adult person in the last few months. It has been amazing and I am very proud. I thank the Lord that he is becoming a true man of God.

First, he graduated from high school. I know that this a route that all kids must take but he made some really wise decisions at his Prom.

Then I watched him be all responsible for his three sisters when we were in Paris and Amsterdam. He always made sure that he was at the back of the pack. Dad leading the way and he kept his eye on them to make sure they didn’t get lost.

Once we were back home he dove into is summer job with a vengeance. Working as much as he can so that he can finish university debt free. I believe he will do it.

Today was a big day. Today he drove out to help a senior in our church. She is a widow, 88 years old and recently fell and broke her shoulder. He is not expecting to be paid for today. He said that it is our responsibility to help her, she’s part of our church family and that is what family should do for each other. He weeded her garden, had coffee time at 10:00 and chatted with her for half and hour. She doesn’t have any children or grandchildren so this would have been a really special time for her.

Seeing him act so responsible and grown up does my heart good. It makes me feel that we have done a good job raising him and that all the prayers that we have said for him have been heard and answered.

After the Rush…

This is the name of our Bible Study group. We named it this because it takes place on a Friday after the craziness of the week. We meet at about 6:15 pm and share a meal (which we usually take turns bringing). I make pizza for the kids. That was the appealing thing about our study, everyone could bring their kids and my kids watch them while we are having our Bible discussions.  Our group consists of 10 adults and 14 kids, with 10 of those kids being under 9 years old!  My kids are great to do this for the study group.

We have been meeting for two years. The first two studies we did revolved around books. The first was John 3:16 by Max Lucado.  This was a good introductory study since many of us did not know the others very well.  It brought us to a level of comfort and trust with the others in the group.

The next book we read was Irresistable Revolution by Shane Claiborne.  That book really got us thinking about how we can serve God where we are and how important it is to live the faith that we profess.

Now we have decided to move right to the Bible (something no one was comfortable with when the group first began).  We are studying the book of Romans.  This is a really thought-provoking book and constantly reminds me of how much I need salvation in Jesus Christ.  I love the fact that I can read the same Bible (different copy, but you know what I am saying!!) that I have been reading for the last 20 years of my life and still find new insights.  Praise God!!

Thankfulness day…

For me, Sunday sets the tone of the week. From now on I’m going to find something to be grateful for each and every Sunday. If I can start my week off with gratitude, I should be able to be more joyful and content throughout the week.

So, today I’m grateful for the wonderful scene outside of my front door.

Each year we have a pair of Canadian geese nest on the small island in the center of our pond. We know Spring is on its way when they return. This year there are six goslings. It is a blessing to watch these birds. Each year the female faithfully sits on her nest for the required 24-28 days. She gets off very rarely and if she does, she is always within about 2 meters of her nest. The male is not usually in the pond but he is never far away. If something threatening comes in the area, he is back in an instant.

When I try to get close, to take a picture, the geese start motioning to their babies and they all rally around and head out to the water.  I just fascinates me.  I watch them on and off all day.

This past week they hatched and we have been watching in amazement as they so quickly grow.  Each spring I learned to have a deep appreciation for these birds.

Watching these goslings peck around at our lawn brings Matthew 6:26 to mind:

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

God is so good!  Watching out my window reminds me of how much He loves me and takes care of me.  I really think that I can start this week off with a healthy dose of thankfulness.

God’s work….

Yesterday, when I went to my kid’s school for my regular volunteer work I was met with a wonderful surprise.

Parents of a couple of our students came in to speak about recent mission work that they had been involved in.

They are involved with the Samaritans Purse. Specifically the Children’s Heart Project. They hosted two women and their children for six weeks while the children underwent life saving heart surgery.

One child was two years old but was the size of a one year old. He wasn’t growing because of his heart condition. He came off the plane in Toronto and was rushed to the hospital emergency room. the heart surgeons both donated their time for the procedures. Both children had so much energy, colour in their cheeks and appetites. it was a blessing to see them.

For me, one of the most interesting things was that this couple was doing it for one reason. They asked God how they could truly serve him where they live. This was their answer.

They spent six weeks with these Mongolian women and their translator. They brought them back and forth to Sick Kids Hospital. They did a Bible study with them.
The question this brought to my mind was: would I have the faith to do what God asked of me?
